Awards are typically bestowed upon websites that demonstrate good design, are aesthetically pleasing and have useful or interesting content. The purpose of these awards is reward webmasters who spend much time and effort making the Web a better place for the surfer. It is not an ego trip. Many webmasters (like myself) create sites purely for the benefit of others, without any form of payment or remuneration. Sometimes, it's just good to know that somebody out there appreciates that time and effort.
